PONTIVY. A five minute drive brings you within the heart of historic Pontivy with its medieval and Napoleonic architecture. The Chateau and a typical French town centre are all set alongside the beautiful river Blavet and Nantes Brest Canal. A top quality 9 hole golf course is within a 10 minute drive. Locally the area is a walkers Paradise with many woodland walks. We are centrally based for visiting many historical areas and are also between one and one and a 1/2 hours drive of the many magnificent beaches and coastal towns of Brittany A monk called Ivy built a bridge nearby over the river Blavet in the 7th century, and the town is named after him ("pont-Ivi" being the Breton for "Ivy's bridge"). From November 9, 1804, the name was changed to Napoléonville after Napoléon Bonaparte, under whom it had around 3,000 inhabitants. After his downfall, it was renamed Pontivy again, then later Bourbonville, and Napoléonville again after Napoléon III came to power. |
